Immersive Software Engineering at the University of Limerick is a course that allows students to graduate with a BSc in three years, or complete a fourth year to receive an MSc. This sped-up time line is possible because of our summer semester which sees students go on paid residencies in our partner companies. We find your summer job for you and give you academic credit for earning money at Ireland’s most exciting workplaces.
ISE operates a studio-based learning approach, similar to the one used in disciplines like design, architecture, art, and media.
Our classes are not taught in lecture halls, they take place in studio labs. The physical space reflects the content of the course and encourages a collaborative environment with interaction among students, allowing them to learn from each other’s ideas, mistakes, and successes.
The majority of our classes take place in one building. ISE’s studios mirror professional environments where Software Engineers, Systems Designers, Software Architects, and User Interaction Designers collaborate on projects. As well as the labs, there are also break out spaces and pods where students can work together in smaller teams.
We operate on a continuous assessment model, with a number of group-based projects to reflect modern professional working environments.
Studio-based learning is key to our immersive approach, and improves technical ability, collaboration techniques and confidence in ways that promote innovation and creativity.
Earn while you learn with Immersive Software at the University of Limerick. ISE students spend nearly half of their time on the course on paid residencies at companies sourced by UL. The living wage is the baseline offered by our Residency Partners, with many opting to pay above that. Residencies mostly take place during summer and contribute to students’ grades. This makes ISE a year-round course where we introduce you to the companies who will host you for the three industry-based summer jobs that will look amazing on your CV when you graduate.
”On my first residency I got to present to two senior principal engineers and some other senior people at Mastercard. That was after less than a year of college.”
“Analog gave me a green field and said ‘We need to do this. Off you go.’ By the end of my first Residency, we were at a working representation of the robot that they wanted to make. As far as I’m aware they are using it and it is saving them time and money”
“ISE takes a really modern approach when it comes to AI. Instead of being told that we shouldn’t use it and it’s a plague against the world, ISE teaches how to use AI within our software development skills.”
ISE students graduate with an MSc in Computer Science (or BSc if they decide to exit early) and are therefore qualified for graduate roles in number of fulfilling and well renumerated industries such as
